Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned ยท North Carolina

Technology built for people the industry overlooks.

OffGlobe is a veteran-owned technology company building applied AI and machine learning, assistive and independent-living technology, deep Linux and Unix systems work, and federal contract software development.

Assistive & Independent-Living Technology

Active R&D in technology that helps people who are marginally able to live on their own keep doing so with confidence. Older adults aging in place, people with sensory loss, mild cognitive decline, or motor limitations, and the family members and caregivers around them. Most accessibility products are built for sighted, fully-abled developers and bolted onto sighted-first interfaces. OffGlobe builds the opposite.

The technical thesis is on-device, privacy-first, and quiet by default. Inference runs locally. No cloud account, no microphone shipped to a vendor, no subscription that disappears the user's tools when billing fails. Pilot study design is complete and a principal investigator has been identified.

Vision Augmentation

Real-time object detection and head-tracked spatial audio that turn a phone or headset into a sonified picture of the surrounding scene. Built for blind and low-vision users, useful for anyone whose vision is degrading.

Independent-Living Support

Ambient awareness for older adults living alone or with light support. Fall and unsteady-gait detection, unusual-pattern alerts, and quiet check-ins that keep family informed without putting a camera in the kitchen.

Cognitive Assistance

Gentle reminders, medication tracking, and orientation cues for users with mild cognitive decline. Designed around routines that already work, not new ones the user has to learn.

Spatial Audio Interfaces

Head-tracked 3D audio rendering for non-visual information display, built with ARKit and the iOS spatial audio stack. Sound becomes a coordinate system, not a notification.

On-device Machine Learning

Real-time inference using CoreML, Vision Framework, and YOLO-family models. Runs entirely on the device. No cloud, no telemetry, no subscription, no surprise data exposure.

Pilot Studies & Partnerships

IRB-ready protocols and a recruitment pathway through clinical and institutional partners: VA Blind Rehabilitation Centers, state commissions, Area Agencies on Aging, low-vision clinics, and university accessibility labs.

AI & Machine Learning

Most AI products on the market overpromise. Most of what actually works in production is narrower, quieter, and better-engineered than the marketing suggests. OffGlobe helps technical leaders separate signal from noise and ship the parts that earn their keep.

On-Device ML

Privacy-preserving inference using CoreML, Vision Framework, and YOLO-family models. Runs on the device. No cloud dependency, no data egress, no per-request billing.

AI Strategy Advisory

Direct assessment of where AI fits in your environment and where it does not. Build, buy, or skip. Opinions delivered, not vendor decks.

Industrial ML

Anomaly detection, predictive maintenance, and signal analysis for OT environments. Designed to survive sparse labels, noisy sensors, and safety constraints that general-purpose ML tools ignore.

AI-Assisted Development

Practical guidance for engineering teams adopting coding assistants and agentic tools. What actually multiplies output, and what creates technical debt disguised as velocity.

Technical Due Diligence

Independent review of AI vendor claims, model evaluation, and contract language. Useful when the sales team is excited and you want a second opinion before signing.

Executive Briefings

Short, jargon-free sessions for boards and leadership teams. Focused on decisions to make, not concepts to admire.

Software & iOS Development

Contract software development with a focus on specialized domains: accessibility, spatial audio, on-device ML, and industrial protocol integration. Published App Store work.

iOS / Swift

Swift, SwiftUI, CoreML, ARKit, and the iOS spatial audio stack. App Store publishing experience.

Systems Languages

Python, Rust, and 6502 assembly. Industrial protocol work including Modbus, RS-485, and DNP3.

Federal Subcontracting

Available as an SDVOSB subcontractor under NAICS 541512 and 541519 to primes pursuing set-aside work.

Linux & Unix Systems

Thirty years of professional Unix and Linux work, starting with Slackware on a 486 in 1996. Production servers, embedded targets, hardened OT gateways, and the kind of debugging that requires knowing what the kernel is actually doing. Most of the consulting work above runs on top of this.

Production Operations

Long-running servers, monitoring, capacity planning, on-call response, and post-incident review. Comfortable with systems that have been up longer than some engineers have been writing code.

System Internals

Kernel modules, /proc and /sys, strace, perf, ftrace, eBPF. Diagnosing the problems that don't show up in application logs because they happen below the application.

Network & Security Hardening

SELinux, AppArmor, nftables, sshd hardening, audit subsystem, and CIS-aligned baselines. Practical hardening for systems that have to stay reachable while staying defended.

Embedded & Industrial Linux

Yocto and Buildroot for OT and edge devices. Cross-compilation for ARM and x86, real-time tuning, and minimal-footprint images for environments where reboots are not free.

Shell & Automation

Bash, zsh, sed, awk, Make, systemd units, and Ansible. Old enough to remember when this was the only automation. Still works when the cloud control plane is down.

Distros & BSD

Debian, Ubuntu, RHEL, Rocky, Alma, Arch, and FreeBSD in production. Long memory for what each one does well and where each one quietly hurts you in year three.

Michael Doornbos

Service-disabled Navy veteran (1993-1999, Gulf War era, Honorable discharge) with 25+ years of technology work spanning enterprise security, industrial operations, software development, and applied machine learning. Currently CTO at a critical-infrastructure technology firm. Founded OffGlobe to extend that work into assistive and independent-living technology, applied AI, and federal R&D.

The service-connected disability that ended a physical career became the reason for a technical one. OffGlobe is built around work that puts that expertise to use: software, consulting, and R&D that produce value from a desk.
